Making the Top of a Gasparo da Salo Viola

Today in the shop, Gregg is working on making a top for a new viola based on a model by the Brescian maker Gasparo da Solo:

It is interesting to note that one characteristic of the Brescian makers is that they beveled the inside of the f-holes on their instruments, as Gregg is doing here:

Anyone want to venture a guess as to what this bevel does to the Helmholtz frequency?

Interpretation of 1744 Del Gesu Ole Bull

Gregg recently completed a violin that is an interpretation of the 1744 Ole Bull violin by Giuseppe Guarneri Del Gesu (some of you probably remember the photo of Gregg cutting the purfling channel for this violin that was featured in the February 2010 issue of The Strad magazine). This violin was commissioned by Dextra Musica in Norway and will be displayed in Bergen, Norway during the Celebration of Ole Bull from May 26, 2010 to June 9, 2010. Here are some photos of the completed violin that were taken before it was sent to Norway:

Gregg will be attending the Celebration of Ole Bull during the first week in June, and we will be posting photos and highlights from the event on this blog, so stay tuned!
